Teh Vaporwarez
June 28th, 2008 by CarsonSo many times, especially at E3, a AAA title will release what we like to call “Vaporware.” It’s essentially either someone pretending they’re playing the game on the target console, or a rendered movie to show people what they want their final game to play like. Fight Night did it. Assassin’s Creed did it. The old PS2 Sony games did it. Even Metal Gear IV did it. Our only beef is that they claim “this is in-game footage.”
Sure, it’s in-game footage if you consider a movie “in-game,” or someone playing the game on a platform it isn’t intended for (the PC). It’s deceptive in the sense that it isn’t what’s being advertised. Yes, it’s what they’re aiming for, and it’s probably what the final game will feel like when you play it, but it’s decidedly not in-game.
And every time, the general masses and even the enthusiast press fall for it hook, line, and sinker.
And despite our criticisms of it, we wish we had their game’s interest.
Because apparently, it works.
